A middle-aged New York housewife deals with her dreary, boring life by escaping into fiction. Her obsession with show business, television game shows and old movies brings various characters into her old cramped apartment. Some of them are real and some imaginary.

The detailed set illustrates Mildred’s obsession of collecting old movie magazines, and shoeboxes full of memorabilia. The television set on stage faces away from the audience, but a movie screen incorporated into the apartment wall shows what Mildred is watching.
